Born in 1957, he is currently Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of the Basque Country, President of the prestigious Basque Science Society Aranzadi, and Deputy Director of the Basque Institute of Criminology. Today, he is the Spanish medical examiner who has the most exhumed from pits and identified bodies of civilians brutally murdered during the civil war and Franco’s dictatorship. This earned him the opportunity to serve on the expert panel of Judge Garzón’s investigation into crimes against humanity perpetrated by the Francoists from 1936 to 1975.
